6.3.3 Criteria Air Contaminants (CACs) Including Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2)
The majority of Project SO2 and NO2 emissions are generated by Minesite vehicles and equipment that burn gasoline and diesel fuel. The Project has too small of a production rate to adopt electrically powered excavators and drills. Some mitigations the Project has adopted to reduce these emissions are:
- bussing of employees and majority of contractors;
- adopting a “No Idling” policy for equipment operated by employees;
- investigate opportunities where commercially available, and economically neutral, to use electric vehicles for personnel transfer vans/busses, light vehicles, coal haul vehicles;
- provide funds to assist employees purchase electric vehicles and/or related charging equipment; and
- provide funds to assist employees to convert inefficient home wood- or oil-burning heating systems to more efficient heating systems. (page 18: TCL will institute a program whereby all employees will be eligible for a one-time grant to assist with the cost of converting existing wood- or oil-fired heating systems to more efficient and cleaner burning alternatives.)
Incentives for employees to upgrade wood stoves or switch to electric vehicles? Interesting!
