Home air Filters

Tip of the Iceberg…

I recently looked into buying a home air filter for a classroom and was astounded at the amount of info. available, way more than anyone wants to know. Here’s my take for what it’s worth…

I wanted something I could pick off the shelf at Cdn Tire so I went on line to double check whether the 2 options of Honeywell’s I could take home that day would work.

Honeywell is well recommended but there were further considerations…

  • true HEPA filter included
  • room size
  • .3 micron level filtration which meets desired covid and particulate matter filter standards
  • energy efficiency
  • noise levels
  • prefilters
  • replacement filters required
  • filter and replacement parts in stock
  • shipping costs
  • clean air delivery rate (CADR) for a 600 square foot room our looking for a 390 CADR rating loosely translated: the number of times an hour the air is completely recycled

And what is the difference between HEPA and Merv? I think I answered that in another entry but here again:

MERV & HEPA Rating For Air Filters

Seems like amazon has all sorts of models on line and available – the aeromax 300 is a well rated 600 square foot option but sounds like it might be noisy on high speed. Thing is if the filters are on 30 minutes before class they can high speed until everyone settles down then on a slower speed they should work just fine cycling the air at a slower rate.

Then I started thinking about face masks and learned that N 95 masks are what we all should be wearing outside anytime of year. I saw them sold as singles at Fields for $1.30 each. These actually do filter out incoming particulate but are not meant to filter out what is breathed out. The rating KN 95 related to an American Health and Safety standard and is a useful way to know we are going to get a reduction in those harmful particles. The covid particle will attach itself to other particles and while it is much smaller than PM2.5 it’s numbers will be reduced by reducing the PM2.5 paticles.

Are all HEPA filters the same?
